ACM SIGMM Award for Outstanding Technical Contributions to Multimedia Computing, Communications and Applications

Dr.YongRuiThe 2018 winner of the prestigious ACM Special Interest Group on Multimedia (SIGMM) award for Outstanding Technical Contributions to Multimedia Computing, Communications and Applications is Dr. Yong Rui. The award is given in recognition of his pioneering contributions to multimedia analysis, retrieval and understanding.
 
Dr. Rui is a Fellow of ACM, IEEE, IAPR and SPIE. His contributions to multimedia research have persistently spanned the past two decades, via his 200+ scientific publications (23,000+ total citations, and an h-index of 70), 65 issued patents, and more than 10 widely used commercial products.  
 
While it is easy to search billions of images and videos on the web today, it was not the case 20 years ago. Dr. Rui’s most distinctive scientific contribution is that he fundamentally changed image retrieval by bridging the human perceptual similarity and image-feature similarity through relevance feedback (TCSVT’98, 2300 citations).  He developed the first image object model, the intra- and inter-normalization processes, and a dynamic weight-updating schema, to enable relevance feedback at the image representation level, feature level, and similarity metric level. In 2000, Dr. Rui further formulated a constrained minimization problem to simultaneously solve for both the optimal image query vector and the optimal transformed feature space. This approach remains the most comprehensive solution to date. His pioneering contributions have led to a new line of research taken up by hundreds of researchers around the world. In fact, over the past 20 years, all the major multimedia conferences, e.g., ACM Multimedia and IEEE ICME, have held special sessions on this topic.  A Google search on “image retrieval with relevance feedback” returns 32,000 results, many of which followed the directions set by Dr. Rui.  Pushing this line of research further, Dr. Rui‘s two recent papers on using search engine’s “click-through” as an implicit relevance feedback signal, won the 2015 IEEE Trans. on Multimedia Best Paper Award, and the 2016 IEEE Signal Processing Society Best Paper Award.
 
Dr. Rui has also made lasting contributions in the broad area of image/video analysis and understanding. (i) Semantic-level video parsing. Dr. Rui developed a novel computational model to automatically generate a video table of contents, and convert a linear and unstructured video clip into a semantically meaningful one.  This work resulted in one of the first MPEG-7 proposals, ISO/IEC JTC1/SC29/WG11 M3110, and directly contributed to MPEG-7’s Description Scheme.  (ii) Dr. Rui’s Gibbs Random Fields framework was the first to model inter-correlation between video concepts, significantly increased the video classification accuracy, and won the 2007 Best Paper Award at ACM Multimedia.  (iii) Multi-modal multimedia fusion. Dr. Rui developed the first principled framework to probabilistically fuse audio and visual observations using dynamic particle filters.  It led to 6 key patents and the first 360-degree audio-visual tele-conferencing product Microsoft RoundTable® in 2007.
 
Dr. Rui is also a strong thought leader for the community. In 1999, he provided timely leadership on open research issues and future research directions, motivating the community to adopt new evaluation metrics and benchmark datasets (JVCIR’99, 2800 citations). Soon after, the discounted cumulative gain (DCG) metrics and the TRECVID dataset were adopted by hundreds of researchers worldwide, and have significantly shaped the community for the past two decades. Dr. Rui‘s pivotal work won JVCIR’s “Most Cited Paper of the Decade Award” in 2010.   
 
Dr. Rui is currently CTO and SVP of Lenovo Group, and previously was Deputy Managing Director of Microsoft Research Asia.  His contributions to the multimedia community go significantly beyond the foundational and technical level. He has also had a profound impact on the development and commercialization of multimedia products for the past 20 years.  Dr. Rui’s video analysis work for Microsoft Movie Maker, best image selection technology for OneDrive, video tracking technologies for Microsoft Roundtable, multimedia and multi-modal AI-empowered Lenovo customer support solution, and Lenovo daystAR, an end-to-end AR solution for vertical industrials, have benefited millions of people around the world.  Dr. Rui also serves as a strong bridge between the multimedia research community and the industry.  In 2009, when he was General Co-Chair of ACM Multimedia, he established the “Grand Challenge” track together with the multimedia industry, which has since become a highlight for the conference for the past 9 years.
